Tinplate is a cold rolled low carbon steel sheet or strip coated with commercial pure tin on both sides. Tin is mainly used to prevent corrosion and rust. It combines the strength and formability of steel with the corrosion resistance, solder and beautiful appearance of tin in a material with corrosion resistance, non-toxic, high strength and good ductility.
Tin plates are inexpensive but are not meant for food use and can be toxic if the tin becomes exposed to the food surface. You do not have that issue with steel enamelware. If an enameled steel piece chips, simply clean the surface and apply cooking oil to the exposed area to reduce any rusting.
